A CALL TO ACTION FOR RESILIENT
SEED SYSTEMS IN CANADA
THE BAUTA FAMILY INITIATIVE ON CANADIAN SEED SECURITY
Canada needs resilient seed systems because without seed, we do not have food.
Canadian farmers today lack access to the wide variety of locally adapted seeds they need to grow food sustainably and adapt to climate change.
Since 2012, we have been working to increase the quality, quantity, and diversity of ecological seed grown in Canada. By supporting farmers, researchers and grassroots organizations, we have made significant progress towards making “made-for-Canada” seeds accessible to farmers. This report shares our achievements from 2012-2018, and highlights what you can do to help build resilient seed systems for Canada.
Creating resilient seed systems, side by side with farmers, brings us closer to a just, sustainable, and well nourished world. Change starts with seeds.
OUR PROGRESS: SEED SYSTEM
DEVELOPMENTS FROM 2012 TO 2018
Achieving resilience in seed systems is a complex goal, requiring action on many fronts
simultaneously. In order to measure our program’s impacts over time, we developed six
indicators of seed system resilience, with a vision statement for each.
